The magic of making a portrait

When I decided to make this portrait to the daughter of family friends who is now a young girl, I searched among the many photographs – which fortunately I had – the one with the expression that I think represented her best.

I wanted to fully grasp what was its essence for me, but despite the various attempts I was never satisfied. Looking at the photo and all its light and shadow, I tried to draw the girl, but a very little pencil mark was enough to completely change her expression and not make me reach the desired result. I continued to draw and look at those little features, the expression of the eyes, the lips that hinted at a smile, the crease of the eyebrows, looking for the right proportion and the right balance between all these elements; and while I was doing it, it was as if I was talking to her confidentially, and she was telling me many things about herself.

The first collective exhibition of the artists of the Castia Art Professional Group, the association I belong to, was held in Cagliari on December 14th and 15th 2019. The exhibition, curated by Katy Carta, featured nine artists: Elena Achilli, Cicci Borghi, Christian Castelnuovo, Francesco Cossu, Andrea Forges Davanzati, Paola Falconi, Veronica ParettaMarilisa Piga and Romeo Pinna.

The exhibition remained open from Saturday afternoon until the end of Sunday and had an excellent success, both for the quantity of visitors and for their quality. As always happens at exhibitions, the insiders came: other artists, curators, journalists and representatives of the institutions. But many collectors and many art lovers also came, in all about 500 visitors. (more…)

The artwork changes and evolves overtime, as the person who makes it.

In the small apartment where I lived with my husband Mario in 1996, I thought and realized the work you see in these photographs while I was pregnant with my first child.

I was commissioned by Mariano Pintus, who later became a dear friend,  for his disco pub “Lagoon” in Villasimius. The place was very famous for its wonderful summer parties in the 90s and more. The work consists of 42 tiles inspired by flowers and plants – all different from each other – and a set of elements applied to the wall, inspired by the marine environment.

This year, during the summer, twenty-three years later, I refreshed the artwork, to which I am very fond. Refreshing a job I did long time ago, when I was a different person, was very inspiring. (more…)

A new beginning

On a September morning I had breakfast with my friend Laura Sechi in my favorite Café in town: the historical “Svizzero”. After having sipped a tasty coffee, we went to the nearby via Sassari where Laura and her business partner Rita are now setting up their restaurant.

Laura and Rita, both with very successful careers, have decided to change their job, embracing a new adventure. Great, isn’t it?! Particularly now that their kids have grown up. Rita always wanted to start her own business; Laura, a great cook and food blogger thanks to her well known “Cooking Laura” blog, had a great dream. She wanted to open her restaurant to do what she likes most: cooking.

A new beginning – Detail

A few weeks later, Rita and Laura asked me to make a piece of art for their restaurant. Filled with happiness, I started thinking, designing and sketching an artwork that could fit the place, the spirit of the restaurant and its owners.

In a rainy afternoon, I invited them in my studio along with the designer that worked at the refurbishment of the place and I showed them the sketches of my proposal. The following day I was commissioned to create the artwork :).
